The Angels were a band that has often been compared to the Australian group AC/DC. They shared the same producers and had a hard rock style characterized by an insistent beat, numerous hooks, and a charismatic frontman. It was always believed that they had more to offer, especially in terms of diversity.
On their debut album, the band demonstrated significant promise, and at least one song, “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again,” became a classic. However, even better albums were to come. Although this album may be considered somewhat ‘poppy’ for the Angels, I still find it quite enjoyable.
If you are a fan and happen to be missing this album for any reason, I highly recommend that you seek it out. For those who are new to the Angels, I would suggest starting with either “No Exit” or “Dark Room.”

Face to Face achieved the #16 position on the Australian Album Charts and maintained its presence on the charts for 79 weeks. This album marked the beginning of a series of career-defining records that, for many outside of Australia, would be considered among the ‘best albums you’ve never heard’ category.
Frequently mistaken for the North American compilation where the band is also referred to as Angel City due to legal reasons, Face to Face itself is filled with outstanding tracks one after another. The compilation is also noteworthy in this regard. The songwriting collaboration of Brewster-Neeson-Brewster is reaching its full potential, and the band has discovered its distinctive sound, characterised by great riffs, memorable guitar solos that are often very melodic, excellent off-beat lyrics, and highly catchy choruses.
While no one truly replicates the sound of The Angels, they still manage to be remarkably accessible. Tracks such as “Straight Jacket”, “After the Rain”, “Take A Long Line”, and “Be With You” exemplify this intriguing paradox, yet the entire album ultimately prevails.

No Exit reached #8 on Australian Album Charts and entered again at #15 in September. The album might be the best overall, which reached #8 on the Australian album charts in July. The songs are catchy and, the riffs are innovative, generally mid-paced in tempo but with lots of string muting between the chords, making some of the songs sound amazing, like a cross between thrash metal and new wave.
Lyrically, the development of The Angels ambiguous take on the outcast starts to crystallise on this album. Often the marginalised in society are criticised, particularly if they privileged and if their choice to be alone is out of fear. Yet other times the, outcast is described in a much more sympathetic light and personified. “Shadow Boxer” / “Planned Obsolescence”, which reached #25 on the charts in June. No Exit, “Waiting For The World” and “Out Of The Blue” work wonders, as does everything else on this great album.

The album Dark Room continues The Angels’ impressive series of albums and is arguably the most varied release in their discography. Broadly categorised, it primarily embodies hard rock, yet it features elements of punk, sombre ballads, blues influences, and even progressive rock characteristics.
As is customary, the guitar performances are outstanding, showcasing great riffs, and the solos are rich with melodies. The lyrics are thought-provoking and challenging; I firmly believe that Doc Neeson was one of the most underappreciated lyricists of his time. Dark Room includes two of the band’s most famous tracks, “No Secrets” and “Face The Day”, both of which are undeniably essential. Dark Room, along with No Exit, epitomises The Angels at their zenith.

Night Attack was arguably the Angels’ least diverse album, which, for once, made the AC/DC comparisons seem almost valid. Although still a great album, one gets the impression that the strategy was to appeal to a North American market less tolerant of bands defying classification.
As a result, the album is largely straight-ahead hard rock with very crisp production, only “Talk About You” and “Storm the Bastille” offer anything vastly different. Lyrical themes continue to deal with the plight of outcasts of various social strata. “Long Night” and “Fashion and Fame” were minor hits at the time, but wide North American acceptance remained elusive. Regardless, the album was, and is, well worth adding to your collection.

Description

Watch The Red achieved a position of #6 on the Australian Album Charts in 1983 and can be considered The Angels’ most distinctive release, yet it continues to be a robust offering. It includes a number of straightforward hard rock tracks such as “Live Lady Live”, “No Sleep In Hell”, and “Stand Up”, however, it also presents a varied range of instrumentation in certain songs, integrating elements like accordion, saxophone, and vocal chants.
Furthermore, a few tracks, specifically “Bow Wow” and “The Zoo/Name Dropping”, are notably unconventional. Nevertheless, the album maintains The Angels’ consistently high standards in creating songs that are both captivating and thought-provoking. Although it may be somewhat of an acquired taste, I personally consider Watch The Red to be one of their greatest works.

Two Minute Warning received gold status and was recorded in Los Angeles over three months and produced by Englishman Ashley Howe. MCA released the album in all territories except Australia and New Zealand, where it was on Mushroom.
The band had written and toured all the songs before it entered the Record Plant recording studio, has a difficult album to record. Another solid album, in my estimation, contains two of the band’s greatest songs in Small Price and Underground. As is typical of most Angels albums, the Brewster brothers Rick covering most of the leads and John anchoring the rhythm continue to provide a clinic to make solos and riffs memorable. It is puzzling why more ‘hard rock guitar people’ players and fans alike have not lauded their body of work. There seemed to be a plague of a minor, disaster major going on around the recordings of car accidents, engineers failing over, arrests, paranoid activity, but the margaritas during happy hour seemed to wash the pain away. The cover art a scale model purpose-built using photos of Downtown buildings.

Howling album was Platinum in Australia and, Gold in New Zealand represents a notable shift in the evolution of the Angels. Recorded at Rhinoceros Studios in Darlinghurst Sydney by Andrew Scott and produced by Steve Brown. The ‘edges are becoming rounder’ as piano/keyboards are present on virtually every track, sometimes smartly augmenting the guitar lines, sometimes completely overtaking the rhythm. Consequently, the Angels produce an album in which the hard-rocking tunes aren’t that hard, and the moodier pieces are more accessible. It is debatable if this is a good thing, but I still find this release an enjoyable listen. Note: at the time of Howling, only vocalist Doc Neeson and guitarist Rick Brewster remain from the original lineup. The loss of John Brewster on rhythm guitar talent, in his replacement, was Bob Spencer is crucial, but it is the shifting songwriting dynamics that may be more important. Eddie Rayner made a guest appearance on a few tracks and, Jim Hilbun played some cool sax. The Angels covered, We Gotta Get Out This Place, the first time the band had recorded a cover version and, it was a huge hit.

Liveline album was Platinum in Australia and Gold in New Zealand. The album reached #37 on Australian Album Charts and reach #13 on New Zealand Album Charts. It took a decade of advertising live performances for The Angels to finally released a Live album recorded from 1981 to 1987. Rightly, advertised as the definitive Angels live document 34 tracks. It includes songs from the first album up to and including Howling. Most of The Angels classics are here as well as several deeper album tracks.
The sound quality is raw and clear one can almost picture Doc Neeson running around the stage and commanding an audience as only he could. Doc Neeson was one of the greatest frontmen of all time if you think this is just fanboy hyperbole. Liveline is also a good starting point for those new to the Angels. The album was released in 1987 and included a year of touring Australia and New Zealand with the much talked about Liveline tour.

Beyond Salvation, the album was Platinum in Australia and Gold in New Zealand. It was released in Australia in early 1990 and only made the first local # 1 of the decade but become The Angels first # 1 album ever. The first session produced Let The Night Roll On, Dogs Are Talking, Rhythm Rude Girl and Junk City. Two months later, the band returned and recorded the rest of the album and half of the next one. It was the opposite of the bands first international recording in LA five years before. Beyond Salvation was produced and engineered by Terry Manning and released in the rest of the world by Chrysalis Records.

Red Back Fever is stylistically slightly more varied than its predecessor Beyond Salvation has a similar emphasis on fairly basic hard rock done very well. The production and performances are top notches, but the song quality is perhaps a step down from The Angels usual high standards. The fact that Doc Neeson was absent from the songwriting credits may account for this. Remark of Ian Hunter classic Once Bitten Twice Shy, but The Angels fans will still find much to like about Red Back Fever, nevertheless. It was recorded partly in Memphis and Sydney Trackdown Studios. Steve James was the producer and, David Hemming the mixing engineer. The album entered the national charts at # 12 it attained gold status on pre-order. The Angels tour for two years, promoting a multi-million promoting dollar government campaign high-lighting alcohol-related violence.

Skin & Bone the best production job ever on an album, with the excellent rhythm section of Eccles and Hilbun being the prime beneficiaries. The reunited Brewster brothers deliver truly, inspired guitar work and, Doc is just the best. I think this is The Angels finest collection of songs since Watch the Red. Sadly, soon after this release, The Angels retreated into warring factions with various lineups providing watered-down versions of this once good rock institution. Release of Skin & Bone with an alternate cover and was issued at the request of merchants who did not wish to carry the original dead dingo cover by Jim Hilbun. Call That Living was recorded at Sony Music Studios and, the remaining recordings were, done between Deman Lodge and Darling Harbour Studios. Produced by Rick Brewster thus, Skin & Bones is effectively the last word on this excellent band.

Talk The Talk is a great album, says lead singer Dave Gleeson. “I feel like I can say that because in some ways, I still get to have an outsider’s perspective… but from the inside. To be involved with the process of writing and recording the album with John and Rick is just such a great experience in itself then to be able to bring something to that process was even more awesome. On top of that to see the Brewster Brothers produce and arrange the final product has been nothing short of watching magic happen. I can’t wait to be delivering the next stage of The Angels’ brand of rock and showing off a great new selection of rock songs. Bring on 2014”
