Diesel Live
On October 24 & 25 2008, Diesel presented the cornerstones of his extraordinary live performances - solo acoustic, electric, power-trio and with strings at Melbourne's Palms showroom. On those two unbelievable nights Diesel and his extended musical troupe delivered a career spanning array of hits and new songs from the critically acclaimed album Days Like These. The show includes classic tracks such as 15 Feet Of Snow, Master Plan, Tip Of My Tongue, Come To Me, and Cry In Shame and also includes a taste of the forthcoming Project Blues album via Walkin The Blues. 9:30 pm Diesel Live DIESEL HITS AND BLUES TOUR
Many faces, one man
One of
Australia's favourite musicians is back in Cains with his new show, Solo And Selected
There are few names in
Australian music as enduring as Mark Lizotte, better known as Diesel.
For the past two decades,
he has been a master of transforming both himself and his sound, producing nine
successful albums under various monikers and leaving a legacy in Australian
music that few could match.
Whether it’s Johnny
Diesel And The Injectors, Diesel, his new project, Diesel: Project Blues, or
just plain Mark Lizotte, one thing has always remained the same – he has
managed to stay at the forefront of Australia’s live music scene but, at the
same time, kept true to the roots that made him successful in the first place.
Time out managed to catch up with Mark before he hits Brothers this
weekend for his Solo And Selected tour.
Following his most recent
album, Days Like These, Solo And
Selected is unique in that not only is Mark losing his band in favour of a
stripped back, acoustic mode, but also, the audience gets to pick the tracks he
plays via a voting card distributed at the start of the gig.
Mark says this makes for
an interesting live music experience where no two sets are the same. He gets to
play his more obscure material alongside his greatest hits.
"It keeps me on my
toes," he says with a chuckle. "Whenever I turn up to do a show, it’s
something to think about.
"I’m not just plucking songs out of my head like I normally do, it’s nice to be able to roll with how the crowd’s feeling. I don’t have them in particular order, which means I can still choose the flow of the set, but it’s a very different experience from regular shows."
He says the crowd has
been choosing an even mixture of his more prominent hits and abstract material.
"The big singles are
obvious ones, you’ll always get that contingency. But then you get the people
who are picking things that must be off their favourite album, using their
opportunity to get me to play something that’s a personal favourite. It’s
great."
Mark says he is looking
forward to getting back to Far North Queensland after missing us out on his
last tour in 2008.
"The tour is an
annex to something I did similarly in 2007 but I put it on the shelf while I
did Days Like These," he says.
"I also finished a
blues album with a full band, which includes my dad on saxophone and my
brothers on the horns.
"I’ve rolled those
things together one and a half years later in this updated version.
"Please take time to look at the list of songs, give me some choices and try to think outside the box. I’m always going to play those obvious ones, so don’t waste your choice with something I’m going play anyway.
"Cairns has always
been a pretty special place to play for me."
Diesel’s Solo And Selected Tour is at Brothers tomorrow from 8pm. Tickets are $30, available now from www.brotherscairns.com.au MY FIRST GIG – DIESEL
Monday 18 May - 9:30pm Johnny Diesel is one of Australia's most well-known singers and songwriters. The brother-in-law of the legendary Jimmy Barnes, Diesel has recorded nine albums, either under his birth name of Mark Lizotte or the epithet Diesel. Best known for his work as a singer and guitarist he is also competent on bass guitar, drums, percussion and keyboards. Born Mark Denis Lizotte on 31st May 1967 in Massachusetts, USA, he immigrated to Australia, settling in Perth aged nine. With his father being an accomplished saxophonist Diesel was surrounded by music from an early age, and it wasn't long before he decided to pick up the electric guitar as his weapon of choice. On deciding that music would become his career, he has said: "I was trying to get my head around algebra and suddenly I thought: 'Hang on, I don't have to do this. I can play music as a job! By his mid teens Diesel was already performing with local bands and in 1993 he joined Perth bar band the Innocent Bystanders. The group attracted the attention of The Angels and went on to record several singles and an album Don't Go Looking Back (1986). Around the same time Diesel split with the band, taking with him drummer Yak Sherrit and bassist John Dalzell, forming Johnny Diesel and the Injectors with George Dalstrom also on guitar. Johnny Diesel and the Injectors relocated to Sydney in 1987 and quickly drew the attention of Jane Barnes, wife of Jimmy Barnes who at the time was in the process of recording his third album Freight Train Heart. Through her recommendation Diesel was hired to work on the album. When Barnes hit the road to promote the album in November, Diesel was retained as his lead guitarist. It was the beginning of a long working relationship between Diesel and Barnes which continues to the present. Johnny Diesel and the Injectors went on to record the eponymous self-titled album and released a swag of extremely successful singles. The group disbanded in 1990. In 1991 Diesel launched himself as a solo artist and huge success soon followed. He continued to play under the Diesel moniker until 1999, then relaunched himself under his birth name Mark Lizotte. Diesel moved to the US for a period, going on hiatus from the Australian music industry, but returned to Australia in 2002 and once again began to record under the name Diesel. To this point in his career, Diesel has sold over 800,000 records in Australia and won nine industry awards. Diesel Discography: Johnny Diesel & The Injectors Discography: Mark Lizotte Discography: Diesel Live Review! The Palms Crown
Diesel - THE 4 CORNERS THE PALMS @ CROWN - MELBOURNE (VIC) By Allan Venn Diesel: Pronounced Dee-zul a) any fuel used in diesel engines. b) a clothing label based in Italy. The brand name was chosen because it pronounced the same way in all languages c) Two-time Brownlow Medalist in 1980's Australian-rules football d) A drink that is 50% beer and 50% coca-cola in Germany e) gifted Aussie singer/songwriter/master guitarist - also known as Johnny Diesel or Mark Lizotte aka brother-in-law of Jimmy Barnes. Currently touring the country on the Days Like These National Tour It all started with Diesel, a singular figure onstage with his 12 sting acoustic guitar in hand, standing before a very understated stage setup. The simplicity of the stage allowed the audience to focus on the music, and Diesel's voice and nimble guitar work soon began filling the room. Some suitably laid back numbers kicked off the acoustic portion of the set, including Burt Bacharach's 'Walk on By' and 'Don't Need Love'. The latter was enthusiastically embraced by the audience, scoring the first crowd sing-along of the night. Diesel was joined by his rhythm section, Richie Vez on bass and Lee Moloney on drums for the second half of the 1st set, however, simplicity was still the order of the day. The blues-drenched cover, 'Please Send Me Someone to Love' received a rousing response and 'All Come Together' brought the first half of the evening to a close. A short 'intermission' gave the audience a change to stretch their legs and top up their glasses. After the break, the curtain rose to reveal a sting quartet and 2 back-up singers - giving 'Fifteen Feet of Snow' an incredibly full, lush sound. The new single 'Days Like These' got a warm response from the crowd, as did the hits 'Never Miss Your Water', 'Love Junk' and 'Tip Of My Tongue'. 'Come to Me' gave the back-up singers a chance to shine. Diesel kept the banter between songs to a minimum, perhaps because there was so much musical ground to cover in one night. Most of the interaction between the band and audience occurred during the songs themselves, with the frontman prompting the crowd to sing the odd chorus or two. And Melbourne's die-hard Diesel fans never let him down! The string quartet added a touch of class and gives the songs a fresh edge. Unfortunately at times the strings were overpowered by the band... A common problem when rock bands join forces with their classical counterparts in a live setting. This kind of marriage almost always sounds better on record where dials can be tweaked and the stings can be allowed to sing. There were numerous video cameras dotted throughout The Palms filming the night's events on stage and off...perhaps we'll see some of tonight's efforts on an upcoming Diesel DVD soon? For an encore we were treated to an acoustic version one of Diesel's earliest hits -- 'Cry in Shame'. This was followed by the night's closer, 'Can't stand the Rain' during which Diesel entered the crowd with his guitar, doing a circuit of the Palms stalls. This was much to the delight of the fans 'down the front' - particularly the female portion! I was concerned he wouldn't make it out alive. All in all, it was rich display from versatile singer & guitar legend's catalogue - a taste of the musicality and songs that made him a household name and then some! CD review - Days Like These, Diesel
Last year Diesel announced that his next album would strip back the keyboards and anything that might get in the way of the guitars. Was he true to his word? Trace him through his Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, Diesel and Mark Lizotte monikers and back to Diesel if you wish, but all his work shows that a rose is a rose is a damn good guitarist - and he can sing! A former cellist (he hocked his first one to buy guitar strings), it’s the 20-plus years with a guitar in hand that showcase his stylish and individual musical skills. With Lee Moloney on percussion and Richie Vez on bass again, he also has a tightly rocking outfit to help further that reputation. His choice of material sometimes suggests Lowell George’s happy eclecticism (both have covered “Can’t Stand the Rain”, for instance) and a shared feel for soulful songs. Diesel lets the material speak rather than drowning it in heavy production or desperately showy fretwork. His uncluttered approach, whether or not it is through favouring the guitar over piano and strings as he suggested, pays off in these bluesy tunes. Days Like These nods cheekily to The Beatles, the early Who and even Smokey Robinson in one case (the lyrics and lilting riffs of “Crimson Man”), and you may be thinking of other musical borrowings here and there, but they are always delivered with an honest, original flourish. Diesel knows when to play less (“Ain’t Giving Up”, “Take My Heart”), when to switch sweet to gruff (“Lay Down Here”), and when to urge the beat up a notch (“Something Good”). The CD cover is a slick pic of Diesel in suit and tie, floating on a pool toy and about to unleash a Pete Townsend thrash on a bright white Gibson guitar. It’s the only contrived thing about an album in which the guitar does take centre stage. Speaking of his desire to keep learning more about how to play, Diesel says that, ‘The guitar is a bit like looking at a sky full of stars for me – every time you look at it you notice something different”. Here is an album of stars worth looking at over and over. Hep Fidelity/Liberation Records. Mark Lizotte Live studio 220

Description: Track Listing 1. Sea By Stars Coathanger Antennae—Diesel [Liberation]
This celebrated Aussie rockstar has enjoyed many personas over the past twenty years. From his Perth origins in the Innocent Bystanders, to his early time as Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, then solo as Johnny Diesel, Diesel, Mark Lizotte and once again just plain Diesel, the man is sure well practised as a rock artist, and rootsy chameleon. This new work Coathanger Antennae showcases his raw talent as a musician and songwriter. Along with his trusted band of accomplished musicians (bassist Richie Vez and drummer Lee Moloney), they threw down this album on the run, using the simple 2 or 3 take techniques of the Stones and the Beatles. The earthy results revel in rock purity, just a man, his guitar and some addictive melodies, upfront and fuss free. And he’s still looking damned hot too. Joints will be jammin' on August 4 with the best sounds
in Australian music
Since the launch of the Jamm 4 Genes campaign and website earlier this month, the response from music venues, promoters, musicians and artist management has been united enthusiasm. From chart-topping Australian Idol star Lee Harding to evocative singer/songwriter Nick Barker; from the perennially popular Unity Hall Jazz Band to country music favourites Beccy Cole, Col Finley and Luke O'Shea; with iconic bands such as Dragon and Choirboys and classic solo artists including Jenny Morris and Diesel; the best of Australia's music talent are lining up to play their part in Jamm 4 Genes on August 4. Crazytown - single
Released:20th May 2006 (LIBERATION) Diesel says "it's a fantasy song about getting the f..k out & just going
somewhere. I'm lucky 'cause I don't have a nine to five job but my hell is being
in the airport all the time. I spend a lot of time in airports and I look at
those sales guys that travel all the time and I think, hang on I'm doing the
same thing ... I get out of my mind with it. Everyone is in some way trapped in
their own rat race and 'Crazytown'" is about wanting to
get in the car and go and not stop. Mark Lizotte AKA DIESEL
Friday 4th November The boyz back in town. New album in the works due for release in Oct - catch a preview! Straight off the back of a non-stop Australian tour. Guaranteed to be to be a solid night of Aussie ROCK. Diesel's first Aussie home
Fifteen years ago musician Mark Lizotte became an Australian household name. His big break came when he stepped out from Jimmy Barnes backing band to form his own group Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. He dropped Johnny and the Injectors and as Diesel had a string of hit songs
through the 90’s. Jenny Morris and Friends
The annual Jenny Morris and Friends benefit concert has fast become a landmark event on the
Australian music calendar and the 2005 edition promises to cement its reputation as the not-to-be-missed event for industry insiders and music lovers alike. Diesel Revs up Music Class
Some would consider themselves lucky enough to see Aussie guitarist Diesel in concert, but to have him sing to you via Satellite is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. That’s why more than 100 of the State’s most isolated students jumped on their computers yesterday to talk one-on-one with the star and listen to an acoustic rendition of Harry Nilsson’s Everybody’s Talking at Me. Diesel, aka Mark Lizotte, was in town for a solo concert he performed at Old St Brigid’s Church on Thursday night. Questions such as “Do you drive a diesel car?” and “I play the guitar, how often do you practise?” were thrown at the singer by eager students. Diesel told the Daily Liberal he’d never been involved in a satellite link-up before and liked hearing what the kids had to say about his work. “I think it’s really incredible, it’s good to get feedack from kids that or any age, it’s really refreshing,” he said. “I’ve known people that have grown up in isolated areas and it can be quite an advantage - isolation is no barrier to succeeding in music.” Diesel is the second musician to play for the distance education students. Former Cold Chisel band member Ian Moss visited the school last September and both Shannon Noll and Russell Morris are lined up for upcoming months. The school’s principal Chris Mason said the satellite system enabled students to keep in touch with the wider world. “This exapnds their opportunity for social interaction with others and the kids were pretty excited about Diesel playing for them,” Ms Mason said. Music festival head to bow out
The artistic director of the Queenscliff Music Festival, Hugo T. Armstrong, will step down from the role after seven years, saying he wants to go out while the festival is thriving. The festival has won a swag of awards since Armstrong took it over in its second year in 1998, including the Victorian Tourism Awards' "Most Significant Festival and Event" three years in a row. It took out the national award in Perth this year. Armstrong was recently awarded the Centenary Medal for services to the Queenscliff community. After announcing the line-up for this year at the Vue Grand Hotel last Wednesday night, Armstrong took aim at Australian promoters for focusing too much on overseas acts."There was a real gap in the festival market for an Australian music event. A lot of the music industry in this country spend too much time looking towards the overseas market, and we could all spend a bit more time celebrating the diversity of Australian music," he said.Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers and the Temperance Union, Men At Work's Colin Hay, Max Merritt and the Meteors, Golden Guitar winner Sara Storer and Diesel, who helped launch the festival, spearhead a line-up of 90 acts to perform 200 shows in 10 venues from November 28-30.Armstrong says one of the highlights will be jazz artists Don Burrows, James Morrison and Joe Chindamo performing together for the first time in a one-off performance.Local musician Xavier Rudd, Kate Ceberano and Perth's Dave Hole, the only Australian signed to famed American blues label Alligator Records, kick off proceedings on Friday November 28. Other artists include Monsieur Camembert, Andy Cowan, Telek, Zydeco Jump, the Spazzys, while Chris Wilson and Ash Grunwald will join other blues performers on the Blues Train.Armstrong said the festival had outgrown some of its small venues, and would use Silver's circus tent for the new Prime Mover stage. It will host the Victorian Government's FReeZACentral initiative on the FReeZACentral youth music stage. He said the festival's strengths lay in its picturesque location on Swan Bay and in its diversity, recalling 2001's line-up when the Church, Billy Thorpe and pianist David Helfgott played on the same stage over three days. One of the highlights for him was watching the fledgling John Butler act with 30 people in the back carriage of the Blues Train at sunset in 1999. DIESEL

Challenge 2
The rules of this game are quiet simple. Ask well known acts to perform songs totally opposite to their own style. The results range from interesting to downright hilarious. Of the international acts Stabbing Westward sing The Carpenters "Top Of The World" and actually do the song justice as a guitar acoustic piece. Canada's Barenaked Ladies give Prince a whole new dimension with their jazzed up version of "When Doves Cry". Willie Nelson doing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is quiet haunting. Nelson had never heard the song before Andrew Denton rocked up at his hotel room with a lyric sheet and asked him to perform it. The result is the first attempt by Willie after hearing the songs only minutes before. Some of the songs are a crack-up. Country singer Adam Brand attempts Wheatus' "Teenage Dirtbag" and what the hell were they thinking when they asked The Wiggles to sing "Walk On The Wild Side"? The Superjesus actually pull off "Can't Stop The Music" in a rock format and Something For Kate bring credibility to Christina Aguilera's "Genie In A Bottle". But Human Nature doing AC/DC's "TNT" ... ouch! And Scandal'us on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" ...gong! Spiderbait's "Jive Talking" is fun, Doc Neeson sounds like he's having just a little bit too much fun with Sheena Easton's "9 to 5 Morning Train" and Killing Heidi really do fit Kiss "I Was Made For Loving You" quiet well. The Living End toning it down for Bread's "Baby I'm A Want You" works and Paul Kelly's "Little Red Corvette" is an absolutely brilliant performance that I'm sure even Prince would be proud to hear. All proceeds go to a good cause. It's all in the name of charity. Volume 1 raised over $400,000 for Mission Australia and children's hospitals across Australia. Christmas is coming. Think of this one as a Great Christmas gift if you can't inspire yourself to shout yourself a copy for your own CD player. Track Listing 1. Powderfinger
- Sorrow Lizottes hosts famous brother
Diesel and his brother have opened up a restaurant in Ettalong Beach War Memorial Club (near Gosford) they played a few tunes for the opening... I dont know if Mark is doing this restraunt thing full time-ish (he might just be like a silent partner) but his brother is doing it full time. Its called Lizotte's, they have another restaurant hooked up to Hardy's Bay RSL Club (near Gosford!) thats been there for a while. Be a rock star on the
cheap
They represent three generations of Australian rock – the 80s, the 90s and now. But they all agree on one thing: the song has changed. According to singer Iva Davies, almost anyone can now be a rock star "for less than a second-hand family car". "Step one in a band was all about how to make a recording, and previously because of technology the facilities were extremely expensive," the Icehouse star said yesterday. "Now anyone can be a recording artist – the downside is everyone who wants to make music is going to." Davies, Tim Farriss from INXS, Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod and Diesel have all adapted to the new wave of rock 'n roll. Gone are the lyrics scribbled on the back of beer coasters, the need for long sessions in expensive recording studios, and long reigns at the top of the charts. All you need is a bit of spare cash, a decent computer and a quiet hotel room. "Technology has made a huge difference," Farriss says. "With our last album, most of it was recorded in a hotel room, so in some ways technology really helped, but by the same token I kind of miss the old style." The four joined a panel of Australian greats and the burgeoning breed of new talent at the International Entertainment Industry conference in Sydney yesterday to discuss the changing face of the local music scene. Farriss, who has been involved in the music industry for the past 20 years, says life as a rock star has definitely changed due to fleeting one-hit wonders who amalgamate rock and dance at the touch of a button. He says the only way to make it is to join the new, accelerated style of music production. "I'm a big fan of all music, but I think at the moment the audience, to a large degree, is being dictated to more so than in the past." McLeod, one of the youngest speakers, says technology can help even if you don't know what you're doing. "Sometimes I'll be on the computer at home and I'll get this great idea, and I know I would never have thought that tinkering around with my guitar," she says. Mark Lizotte - Dream run
Dream run Mark Lizotte (aka Johnny Diesel) is one of those names that pops up in Australian popular culture every once in a while. Now based in New York, Lizotte’s connections to Australia are somewhat less direct than they once were. Currently residing in the shrinking artist district of Soho in Manhattan, he’s lapping up the sleepless and often contradictory nature of the city around him. "Most musician types live in Brooklyn, but I’ve got a good apartment in an artist’s block here," Lizotte remarks. "It’s kind of strange because most of the people living around me are futures traders or work on the stock market in some way. You’ll walk out on the street and see people skate past you dressed in shorts and a shirt talking on their mobiles about what the Dow Jones is doing. It’s what makes this place so interesting." As interesting and paradoxical as New York may seem, the price of living is high and there’s no way of eking out a cheap living in Manhattan, even if you set up camp in Alphabet City. For Lizotte, work has been good to him – aside from his own songwriting, he’s been able to team up with other songwriters to assist them and in some cases, produce their music. "I’ve had the chance to work with a lot of people since I’ve been here. Just recently, I was working with a singer/songwriter called Kim Ferron. She’s on the Concrete label. I produced some of her songs too. I’ve also been invited to work on some soundtrack work. It’s actually a short film that’s being put together by an Australian guy I met here in New York. "That’s one of the great things about New York: I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of very interesting Australians I might not have had the chance to meet had I been back there. New York has this habit of drawing together a lot of very creative people from all over the world. It’s such a convenient place to be; you get spoiled here." Speaking of being spoiled, Lizotte’s current tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Hard Rock Café is really one of those dream runs that more resembles a well planned holiday. "I’ll be playing all the Hard Rock Cafés in the Southern Hemisphere," Lizotte explains. "Even Bali – that’ll be nice. It’s also a chance for me to try out a few of the new songs I’m working on for my next album too. I won’t be inflicting too many of those on people though; I’ll be playing stuff from all my albums, plus a couple of new ones." Mark Lizotte, brother of Brian Lizotte who runs Lizotte's Restaurant at the Ettalong Beach Memorial Club, performed at the club last Sunday. Better known as Diesel of Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, the performance co-incided with the imminent release of his first single in Australia since 1998 Guitarist, singer and songwriter, Diesel only returned to Australia 12 months ago, following a five-year stay in New York. His time here has been occupied with writing and road testing new material, culminating with a special Australia Day performance for ex-pats this year in Vietnam. Recording at Studios 301 in February, Diesel is now armed with a soon to be released single. He performed at the Ettalong Beach Club, for one night only, in the intimate surroundings of Lizotte's Restaurant. Cold Live At The Chapel
If you never got to see the often brilliant Cold At The Chapel television series, it's probably because - like every other decent music show in the last couple of decades - it was programmed to appeal stircity to insomniacs. As with the sponsorship-free Studio 22 over on the ABC, the producers behind Channel 7's Live At The Chapel were keen to get as many diverse music acts on its little stage as the half-hour could handle. So this best-of features everyone from The Foo figters to The Cruel Sea to Shawn Mullins to Killing Heidi to Fuel to The Whitlams' and so on. The actual quality of the live recording is exceptional. Performance-wise, Paul Kelly's blue-grass take on "To Her Door", Mark Lizotte's revial of "Tip Of My Tongue" and You Am it's screeching classic "Cathy's Clown" are immediate stand-outs. But the whole thing is impressively balanced and entertaining enough. New Future
Mark Lizotte (aka Diesel) has created a soulful new CD that is very appealling to Diesel fans as well as a new age of music lovers - the 17 to 25 year olds. This track is a good example of the progression of another great artist from Australia. 'Satellite' is representative of Lizotte's album 'Soul Lost Companion' which reflects his earlier works in rock and blues/rock, but also has a distinctly contemporary flavour. We assure you that this tune will grow on you very quickly, as will many of the other tracks on the album. Lizotte's funky and sexy voice is also a great asset and is backed up with an excellent array of talented musicians. Of interest is the inclusion of a Cello; an instrument that we understand was Mark's first guitar! Have a listen - you won't be disappointed. Mark Lizotte Official Site
